The Marstall
image author: Peter Hennig The Marstall or Salzhaus is situated at the city centre's big place, the so-called Neustadt (New Town). The salt chamber was here first in 1389 because Zittau had the privilege in the Middle Age, as a rich trading city, to store salt.
The Marstall was reconstructed from the former Salzhaus in 1511. The three floors were used first as granary and armoury. Much later it was also used a stable for horses. In 1572 the building gained a 4th floor and in 1730 the enormous mansard-roof was added.
Today the Marstall has been completely renovated. It houses now the municipal library, restaurants and many small shops and invites visitors to a shopping stroll.
